Frequently asked questions

What does The Refinery do?

The Refinery is a marketing agency that creates key art, campaign creative, platform art, out-of-home, experiential, social, digital display, FYC, and finishing for entertainment studios, streamers, networks, filmmakers, and brands.

What makes The Refinery different from other entertainment marketing agencies?

The Refinery understands the campaign idea and its afterlife. A strong concept still has to survive the platform tile, social crop, billboard, trade ad, FYC mailer, OOH takeover, and last-minute version nobody warned anyone about. We build creative systems with that reality in mind, work designed to look good, move well, scale clearly, and stay recognizable wherever the campaign goes next.

Does The Refinery work with brands outside of entertainment?

Yes. The Refinery has expanded beyond entertainment into brand, CPG, sports, and retail marketing, applying the same visual storytelling discipline built over 20 years of entertainment campaigns to categories that need to fill seats, empty shelves, or win attention in a crowded feed.

We are the visual creative agency brands call when their AOR isn’t enough.

What kinds of projects and clients is The Refinery best suited for?

The Refinery works with studios, streamers, networks, filmmakers, and entertainment brands across theatrical releases, streaming launches, television campaigns, franchise and legacy titles, live events, documentaries, and awards campaigns. We can build a campaign system from scratch, including visual positioning, key art, platform adaptations, social, OOH, experiential, and FYC, or take over from approved key art, existing guidelines, or supplied assets and extend it across every format the campaign needs.

Does The Refinery create key art?

This is our expertise. We create hero imagery, title treatments, one-sheets, shoot concepts, and creative direction for photoshoots. Entertainment key art has to communicate genre, tone, talent, story, and audience promise in one image, then survive being a poster, platform tile, billboard, social crop, and FYC asset. We’ve worked on a number of titles including Outlander (including on-location creative direction in the Scottish Highlands), Mad Men, The Last of Us, Final Destination: Bloodlines, the Toy Story franchise, The Handmaid’s Tale and many, many more.

What is streaming platform creative, and is it just resized key art?

No. Platform art is promotional creative built specifically for how audiences choose what to watch, thumbnails, rows, episodic cards, post-play recommendations, and device-specific formats. It’s adapted or newly created around placement, crop, and viewer behavior, not simply resized. The Refinery has built platform creative for Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, Hulu, Paramount, and Amazon, including a 100+ asset platform suite for several titles, including multiple seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Does The Refinery create out-of-home and specialty builds?

Yes, including static OOH, billboards, transit, digital OOH, 3D and anamorphic billboards, environmental takeovers, and immersive builds. Work includes international OOH for Lift, specialty outdoor for Final Destination: Bloodlines, environmental OOH for SNL 50, and 3D/anamorphic OOH for The Day of the Jackal, Ted 2 and The Copenhagen Test.

What is experiential campaign creative?

Physical entertainment marketing that gives audiences something to enter, touch, photograph, or share, in-theater activations, immersive environments, themed pop-ups, and fan installations. The Refinery leads concepting, environmental design, and creative direction, with fabrication typically handled by production partners. Recent work includes Snow White, Paradise Season 2, SNL 50, and Descendants: Wicked Wonderland.

What social creative does The Refinery produce?

Platform-native content built around a title’s story, fandom, and platform behavior: social-first trailer edits, cast and junket content, memes, GIFs, Stories, and reactive creative. Recent work includes 175+ custom assets for HBO Max tentpoles and Universal theatrical releases.

What brand marketing services does The Refinery offer?

The Refinery brings entertainment-grade creative craft to brand campaigns, including brand film and video, social content systems, motion and digital display, out-of-home, and internal brand moments like sales kickoffs and conference activations.

Does The Refinery handle high-volume digital display?

Yes, including static and animated display ads, paid media assets, and rapid versioning across campaign changes. For UFC on Paramount+, The Refinery supported high-volume digital display across multiple live-event campaigns, including thousands of assets with rapid re-delivery when campaign details changed midstream.

What is FYC campaign creative?

For Your Consideration creative, the awards-season marketing that helps voters remember and evaluate a film, series, or performance. The Refinery creates FYC strategy, key art, trade ads, guild mailers, and premium packaging.

How is The Refinery’s brand work different from a traditional ad agency?

Most brand creative comes from agencies trained to sell products. The Refinery was trained to sell worlds. Twenty years of building campaign systems for major studios and streamers means we understand how to make an idea travel across formats, platforms, and attention spans, a skill that translates directly to brand and consumer marketing, not just movie posters.

Why does finishing matter?

Finishing protects the creative idea as it moves across surfaces, from one-sheet to billboard to platform tile to FYC ad. It’s what keeps a title feeling premium and consistent everywhere it appears, retouching, compositing, color, versioning, and quality control through final delivery.

Does The Refinery support international and franchise campaigns?

Yes. Our work spans domestic and international rollouts, including global key art and OOH for numerous campaigns, with multiple languages.

Can The Refinery build a brand campaign the way it builds an entertainment campaign?

Yes. The same systems thinking that carries a film from key art through platform, social, OOH, and finishing applies to brand work: a single idea, adapted cleanly across every surface a brand needs to show up on, without losing what makes it distinct.

What should entertainment marketers look for in a creative partner?

A team that understands both the idea and the system around it, one that can develop strong creative and adapt it across key art, platform, OOH, social, digital display, experiential, and FYC without losing the idea along the way. The question isn’t just “can this look good?” It’s “can this survive everywhere it has to go?”
