The Refinery created key art, teaser art, FYC creative, digital display, website takeovers, trade ads, OOH, murals, bus shelters, wild postings, and guild mailers for Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 — a full campaign system that carried the series from launch through awards-season consideration. The premiere delivered: 1.04 billion minutes viewed in its first week per Nielsen, the biggest number any Hulu series had posted in Nielsen’s streaming rankings at that point and what Deadline called Hulu’s most-watched original season debut ever. The season went on to earn 21 Emmy nominations.

The challenge
By Season 4, The Handmaid’s Tale already had one of the most recognizable visual identities in television. The challenge was not to introduce the world. It was to deepen it.
The launch creative needed to feel unmistakably tied to the series while signaling movement, escalation, survival, and emotional force. Then the campaign had to shift into FYC, where the job changes. Awards creative has to refine the campaign, not restart it. It has to make the title feel worthy of consideration while preserving the visual discipline audiences already associate with the series.
For a prestige streaming drama like The Handmaid’s Tale, the campaign had to hold together across key art, teaser art, digital display, website takeovers, trade ads, OOH, murals, bus shelters, wild postings, SAG mailers, and FYC surfaces while still feeling like one coherent visual system.

The idea
The Refinery approached the campaign with two symbolic visual ideas.
For the hero key art, the campaign leaned into a phoenix theme: a red burning dress transforming into feathers. The image suggested destruction, rebirth, resistance, and force, all while staying rooted in the visual language of the series.
For the teaser, the idea was quieter but just as specific: a flower growing through concrete, with a red stem and white petals forming the shape of a handmaid’s hood. The image expressed defiance, survival, and hope without softening the severity of the world.
Those two images gave the campaign its emotional range. The phoenix carried power and transformation. The flower carried persistence and resilience. From there, the campaign expanded into FYC and awards-season creative across trade, digital, OOH, website reskins, and physical campaign moments designed to keep the series present in the awards conversation.

What The Refinery made
Phoenix key art
The Refinery created Season 4 key art for The Handmaid’s Tale built around a phoenix concept, with the red dress transforming into feathers. The image gave the campaign a strong symbolic foundation while preserving the show’s recognizable visual identity.
Teaser art
The Refinery created teaser art featuring a flower growing out of concrete, with a red stem and white petals forming a handmaid’s hood. The teaser used a restrained, poetic image to express resilience and resistance.
FYC creative
The Refinery extended the campaign into FYC creative, supporting the awards-season push around 21 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series.
50+ digital display assets
The Refinery created more than 50 digital display assets for the campaign, including banners and FYC digital units adapted across placements and formats.
Website takeovers and reskins
The Refinery created website takeovers and reskins for outlets including The Wrap, Us Weekly, and People, extending the campaign into high-visibility entertainment and editorial environments.
NYC painterly mural billboard
The Refinery created a painterly mural billboard in New York City, giving the campaign a large-format outdoor presence tied to the title’s visual identity.
Venice handprinted FYC mural
The Refinery created a custom handprinted mural in Venice featuring the show’s 21 nominations, including the Outstanding Drama Series nomination. The mural gave the FYC campaign a physical, high-impact awards-season statement in Los Angeles.
Wild postings and bus shelters
The Refinery created wild postings at Olympic and Figueroa and Centinela, along with two bus shelter executions, extending the campaign into street-level OOH in Los Angeles.
Trade ads and Variety gatefolds
The Refinery created FYC trade advertising for The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Backstage, and AwardsLine, including full-page ads and Variety gatefolds.
Screen Actors Guild mailers
The Refinery created Screen Actors Guild mailers as part of the campaign’s physical FYC outreach.
Production, finishing, and delivery
Across launch creative, FYC, digital display, website reskins, trade, OOH, murals, and mailers, The Refinery supported production artwork, finishing, quality control, and final delivery to keep the campaign visually consistent across every surface.

Why it worked
The campaign worked because it gave The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 a strong visual progression.
The key art and teaser did not simply repeat the series’ existing imagery. They extended it. The phoenix image suggested transformation and force. The flower-through-concrete teaser suggested resilience and persistence. Both were symbolic, emotionally clear, and unmistakably title-right.
That foundation gave the FYC work something to build from. Instead of creating a disconnected awards campaign, The Refinery translated the season’s visual language into trade ads, digital display, website takeovers, murals, bus shelters, wild postings, and SAG mailers. The campaign could move from launch urgency into awards-season consideration without losing its tone.
The work also showed range. It moved from poetic teaser art to dramatic hero imagery, from 50+ digital display assets to full-page trade ads, from website takeovers to a handprinted Venice mural, from street-level wild postings to Screen Actors Guild mailers.
For The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4, The Refinery built a campaign system that could launch the season with force and support its FYC push with clarity, discipline, and presence.
