The Refinery created large-scale OOH and environmental campaign creative for the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary — a Sunset barricade in Los Angeles, a full Grove takeover, and a 30 Rockefeller Center subway station domination in New York. The campaign supported a cultural moment that delivered: the February 16 special drew 14.8 million viewers across NBC and Peacock, NBC’s largest entertainment telecast in five years and more than 200% above SNL’s season average. Season 50 itself averaged 8.1 million viewers, its biggest season average in three years.

The challenge
For the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live, the campaign had to celebrate more than a show. It had to celebrate a cultural institution.
The assignment came with fifty years of cast members, characters, sketches, hosts, musical moments, fandom, nostalgia, and collective memory. The work needed to feel big enough for the milestone, flexible enough to feature generations of talent, and public enough to make the anniversary feel impossible to miss in both Los Angeles and New York.
The campaign also had to work in places with real pressure. The Grove sees roughly 20 million annual visitors, with up to 90,000 visitors per day in peak times. Rockefeller Center properties saw more than 35 million visitors in the twelve months ending July 2024 and provide direct access to the 47th–50th Street Rockefeller Center subway station. These were not quiet placements. They were public stages.
Very SNL. No pressure.

The idea
The Refinery approached the SNL 50th anniversary OOH as a celebration of scale, cast legacy, and physical presence.
The creative needed to do more than place anniversary artwork on existing media. It needed to make the environments feel taken over by the history of the show. The campaign leaned into the sheer volume of SNL’s legacy: cast members across generations, faces fans could recognize instantly, and a milestone “50” designed to feel dimensional, celebratory, and unmistakable.
In Los Angeles, the campaign turned high-traffic outdoor and retail environments into anniversary showcases. In New York, the work returned the celebration to SNL’s home turf, transforming the 30 Rockefeller Center subway environment into a full commuter-facing campaign experience.
The idea was simple: make fifty years feel physically present.
Not a tribute tucked neatly into a media buy.
A takeover.

What The Refinery made
Sunset extension barricade
The Refinery created a dynamic Sunset extension barricade for the SNL 50th anniversary campaign, featuring major cast members from across the show’s history. The execution included dimensional heads, arches, and a giant “50” extending above the wall, giving the barricade a sculptural profile instead of a flat-top read.
The Grove takeover
The Refinery created campaign creative for a full takeover at The Grove in Los Angeles. The takeover featured every SNL cast member from across the show’s history on custom banners, turning the retail and entertainment destination into a public anniversary environment.
OOH billboards and banners
The campaign included additional OOH billboards and banners throughout The Grove environment, extending the anniversary message across multiple high-visibility surfaces.
Parking-lot billboards
The Refinery created parking-lot billboard creative as part of The Grove campaign footprint, reaching visitors as they entered, exited, and moved through the property.
30 Rockefeller Center station domination
In New York, The Refinery created a full station domination at the 30 Rockefeller Center subway environment, connecting the campaign directly to the show’s iconic home base.
Subway live boards, singles, and triptychs
The station takeover included subway live boards, single boards, and triptychs designed to create repeated campaign visibility across the commuter journey.
Subway billboards and wall takeovers
The Refinery created subway billboards and full wall takeovers, expanding the anniversary creative across large-format station surfaces.
Pillar wraps and turnstile wraps
The station domination also included pillar wraps and turnstile wraps, extending the campaign into the physical architecture and movement patterns of the subway environment.
Production, finishing, and delivery
Across Los Angeles and New York placements, The Refinery supported production artwork, versioning, finishing, quality control, and final delivery so the campaign could hold together across dimensional barricades, banners, billboards, transit media, wraps, and full environmental takeovers.
Why it worked
The campaign worked because it treated the SNL 50th anniversary as a physical celebration, not just a media placement.
The Sunset barricade used dimension, cast recognition, and a giant anniversary “50” to make the work feel built into the street. The Grove takeover used volume and repetition to honor the full sweep of the cast. The 30 Rockefeller Center station domination brought the campaign into the daily path of New Yorkers, commuters, visitors, and fans moving through the show’s home environment.
That location strategy mattered. Los Angeles gave the campaign entertainment-industry visibility and fan-facing scale. New York gave it origin-story relevance. Rockefeller Center is not just a media location for SNL. It is part of the show’s mythology.
The work also understood the emotional job of an anniversary campaign. It had to reward longtime fans while remaining instantly legible to casual viewers. Cast faces, custom banners, dimensional elements, and takeover-scale repetition gave audiences multiple ways in: recognition, nostalgia, discovery, and sheer “wait, look at that” energy.
For a show built on live performance, cultural memory, and decades of familiar faces, the campaign made the anniversary feel public, dimensional, and appropriately hard to miss.
